Do you bloat after eating?

February 24th, 2017 by admin

If it feels like you swallowed a basketball after you eat, you may be wondering what causes your bloating after meals?

One reason that you may bloat after eating is that you may not be digesting the food you eat. When you are not completely digesting your food, bacteria and yeast in the intestines ferment the undigested food and produce gas that bloats your belly. What many people don’t realize is that stomach acid is essential to starting the process of digesting our food. As we age, we tend to make less and less stomach acid, and our digestion suffers. Medications such as Antacids, H2 Blockers, and Proton Pump Inhibitors, which are designed to reduce stomach acid, have the side effect of producing bloating for many people.

Probiotics! Is Your Gut Bacteria Making You Fat?

February 11th, 2015 by admin

By Dr. Patrick Giammarise, DC, IHS

We all know that bacteria can make us sick but did you know that bacteria might also make us fat? Researchers have discovered that thin people have different bacteria in their guts than overweight people. How could that be possible?

Scientists theorized two factors could be responsible. First, increased use of antibiotics may be eliminating the bacteria that help people regulate appetite and metabolism.

Studies also reveal that bacteria appear to exhibit communications between each other and our genes, which may be affecting our hormones that regulate our appetite and moods.

What is not clear is which is the chicken and which is the egg. Is it the bacteria that makes us overweigh or is it that our weight gain causes changes in our bacteria?

More research needs to be conducted for us to know for sure but there are some emerging facts (read more…)

What Does “Organic” Really Mean?

September 16th, 2013 by admin

I was standing next to a woman in the supermarket aisle as she was reading the label of a cereal box. She looked up and asked out loud:

“I wonder if buying organic is really worth the price?”

We have all heard that we should read the labels of the groceries we buy, but it can be confusing. What’s the difference between100% organic or just organic?

Did you know that the word “organic” has 4 different meanings depending on the label?

To the woman’s surprise, (she who didn’t know I specialize in helping people with food allergies and digestion), I gave her a quick rundown.

  • 100% organic products contain ONLY certified organic ingredients.
  • “Organic” products must contain at least 95% organic ingredients.
  • “Made with organic products”: At least 70% of ingredients must be organic.
  • Products with less than 70% organic ingredients can list specific organic ingredients on the packaging.

So next time you ponder a label, hopefully that helps clarify what organic really means.

Thanks for reading! If this was helpful, feel free to pass it on.
