Memorial Day Celebrations

Monday, May 31st, 2010 is Memorial Day and there will be many events throughout Shasta County and the surrounding area honoring the men and women who have died in military service. Please take the time commemorate the local veterans and currently serving men and women. Several of the services planned will host  guest speakers, rifle salutes, color guards, patriotic music and wreath laying.

Redding Memorial Park on Continental Street in Redding will hold its 77th Annual tribute featuring a F-15 flyover by the Oregon Air National Guard 173rd Fighter Wing out of Klamath Falls and a skydiver. Maj. Kurt Walling of Redding, who served in the Gulf War will speak. 12:00pm.

Norther California Veterans Cemetery in Igo will also feature a four-plane T-38A Talon flyover from the 1st Reconnaissance Squadron, 9th Reconnaissance Wing from Beale Air Force Base near Marysville. Rocky Chavez from the California Department of Veterans Affairs is the keynote speaker, as well as Charlee Thompson, President SCVAC and retired US Army Veteran, and WO2 Andrew VanVeen from the US Army Reserves. The Foothill High School Band and Jazz choir will perform and a bagpipe duo. Service starts at 5:55pm.

Other services will be held at Anderson Cemetery on Monday at 10:45am in Anderson, Lawncrest Chapel on Monday at 10:00am on East Cypress in Redding, and the Veterans Memorial Grove on Sunday May 30th at 11:00am next to the Redding Convention Center.
